Jack Sawyer jokes about returning to Ohio State during national championship celebration

Ohio State football celebrated its national championship victory on Sunday inside Ohio Stadium. For a moment, gathered Buckeyes fans thought there was more to celebrate.

During his speech at the team’s championship celebration, defensive lineman Jack Sawyer joked about returning to play another year for his hometown team.

“With that being said, I think it’s a good time to announce that I’m coming back for my fifth year,” Sawyer said.

Then came the punchline, after he was greeted with a roar of excitement from fans: “I’m just kidding. Coach Day and (Ohio State defensive line coach Larry) Coach Johnson said it’s time to come out of Columbus.”

The Pickerington, Ohio native etched his name further into Ohio State’s record books and legacy in the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff Cotton Bowl semifinal win over Texas. In the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, Sawyer came around the outside and strip-sacked Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and returned it for 83 yards.

Sawyer’s score was the longest fumble returned for a touchdown in the history of the CFP.

“I saw the ball popping out right to me after I tackled him (Ewers),” Sawyer told ESPN’s Holly Rowe on Jan. 10 of the play. “I was just thinking, I just got to keep saying my feet because like I said, I almost blacked out when I scooped it and saw anything but green grass ahead of me.”

In Ohio State’s national championship win over No. 7 Notre Dame, the 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive lineman finished with three total tackles.

Sawyer, who has not officially announced his declaration for the NFL draft, will end his tenure with the Buckeyes as one of the top defensive linemen in program history. In four years in Columbus, Sawyer recorded 138 total tackles (25.5 tackles for a…
