Report: FSU football loses 5-star quarterback Brady Smigiel in 2026 class

Florida State football took a big hit in its recruiting class of 2026 as five-star quarterback Brady Smigiel decommitted on Sunday evening. This was first reported by On3 Sports.

Smigiel, a California native, pledged to the Seminoles since last summer after making multiple trips to the campus.

He has been on the rise in his recruiting efforts, receiving offers from Ohio State, UCLA, Michigan State, and South Carolina. He was seen with OSU’s offensive coordinator Chip Kelly in an in-home visit.

Smigiel led Newbury Park to a 14-1 record. In his junior year, he threw for 3,521 yards, 49 touchdowns, and three interceptions. In three seasons, he has thrown for over 11,000 yards and 147 touchdowns.

He is ranked the No. 6 quarterback in the country and 48 nationally according to On3’s high school rankings. FSU now has five verbal commits for next year’s class.

Smigiel was expected to be the FSU’s top recruit for the 2026 class.

A lot has changed since he committed to the Seminoles. FSU went 2-10 in the 2025 season. Mike Norvell fired his former offensive coordinator and O-line coach, Alex Atkins, replacing him with Gus Malzahn and Herb Hand.

FSU signed 19 incoming freshmen, including quarterback Kevin Sperry.
