Alabama high school football’s Mr. Football award is staying at Saraland High School.
Quarterback KJ Lacey, who is now an early enrollee at Texas, won the award continuing a three year run for the school. Alabama football wide receiver Ryan Williams won the award back-to-back years, the only player to do so, in 2022 and 2023 while playing for Saraland. They are the only winners from Saraland High School.
“It’s been great. It’s saying something about Saraland the program is really good,” Lacey said.
In 2024, Lacey threw for 3,042 yards and 40 touchdowns while leading the Spartans to the Class 6A state title. He completed 62% of his passes while missing two games. Lacey was also named the Class 6A back of the Year at the award banquet.
“It was crazy,” Lacey said. “All of the people that were here supporting me … it was crazy. Just the flashbacks to what happened at Saraland, everything that’s been going on. All the crazy seasons we’ve had. All the ups and downs, the stuff that we had to go through to get here. All around, glad I got it and made my mark on the state.”
Lacey joins a list of top players who have brought home Mr. Football in Alabama including NFL quarterbacks Bo Nix, JaMarcus Russell and Freddie Kitchens. Other past winners include Carnell Williams, Julio Jones and Kool-Aid McKinstry.
