Is Penn State football in the running for top 2025 recruits before National Signing Day?

Penn State football all but wrapped up its 2025 recruiting class pursuits weeks ago − long before next week’s traditional National Signing Day

The once-hectic, rush to the finish to land top prospects by the first Wednesday in February is no more. Penn State, like most Power 4 teams, had all 27 members of this class make their verbal commitments binding during the December early signing period.

So only two of the country’s top 100 prospects, according to 247Sports, remain unsigned. The Nittany Lions do not appear to be in the running for either − offensive tackle Ty Haywood of Texas and defensive end Zahir Mathis of Philadelphia. (Michigan and Florida State have been among favorites for both).

Penn State’s class, which expectedly is finished, is ranked No. 14 by On3 and No. 15 by 247Sports − about the norm for coach James Franklin and his staff. It’s expected that at least a few of these true freshmen will provide immediate, meaningful contributions for a team that lost narrowly in the College Football Playoff semifinals and appears primed for another deep postseason run.

The team that boldly hired arguably the nation’s top defensive coordinator away from national champion Ohio State.

Much of Penn State’s ongoing recruiting energy is being spent on its 2026 class, which has nine verbal commitments and is ranked No. 3 nationally. Those players cannot make their pledges binding for 10 months.

Still, Wednesday’s traditional signing day is reason for fans to celebrate this recently finished group. One in which more than half of its members are enrolled early and already are on campus, working out with the team.
