Texas football added its third transfer defensive lineman on Wednesday morning when former Ohio State DT Hero Kanu announced his commitment to the Longhorns via social media.
Listed at 6-foot-5, 305 pounds, Kanu is originally from Germany and played his high school football at Santa Margarita Catholic in California.
Kanu operated out of an auxiliary role for the Buckeyes on their way to a national championship last season, playing 123 snaps in 16 games. He’s collected 14 tackles and one sack in 29 career games and has two years of eligibility remaining.
Kanu was a highly-touted prospect out of high school, ranked 129th nationally in the 2022 class by the 247Sports Composite. He held an offer from the Longhorns before ultimately choosing the Buckeyes.

He’ll bolster a group of Texas defensive tackles that again finds itself in a moment of transition. Starters Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton are off to the NFL, and Texas’ primary backups ‒ Bill Norton and Jermayne Lole ‒ are both moving on, too. Four further transfer portal departures on the defensive line left the Longhorns in need of a restock.
Kanu certainly contributes to that effort, joining Purdue’s Cole Brevard and North Carolina’s Travis Shaw as Texas’ additions in that area. The Longhorns’ 2025 signing class also includes three interior defensive linemen, including five-star prospect Justus Terry.
