Even with a commitment from Hero Kanu on Wednesday morning, the usual storm of offseason transfer portal chaos has more closely resembled a light rain as far as Texas football is concerned.
After diving into the portal for 12 players last offseason, the Longhorns have made just five additions, with the pool of uncommitted winter transfer portal entries now looking quite shallow. That matches the approach of the two other SEC teams that qualified for the 2024 College Football Playoff. Tennessee has added just four transfer portal players, with Georgia making six additions.
Are there still players available in the portal who could help the Longhorns next season? Here are three possible candidates.
Pat Coogan, Notre Dame
After fielding one of the most experienced offensive lines in college football last season, the Longhorns are suddenly looking awfully green in the trenches, with guard DJ Campbell set to be their only returning starter.
Pat Coogan comes loaded with the high-level experience Texas lacks.

Coogan, a center, played 1,582 snaps over the last two seasons. In the 2024 campaign, he helped lead Notre Dame to the national championship game, allowing eight pressures and just one sack in 14 appearances.
Listed at 6-foot-5, 310 pounds, Coogan received a 79.0 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus and a 69.0 mark as a run blocker.
A recent report from On3’s Pete Nakos on Wednesday indicated Coogan had set visits to Ole Miss, Indiana and Michigan.
Other noteworthy centers with experience in the portal include UTSA’s CJ James Jr. and UNLV’s Jack Hasz.
Rocco Spindler, Notre Dame
There’s another intriguing name up for grabs from Notre Dame’s offensive line.
