There will be a new head coach on the football sidelines at Absegami this fall.
Warren Smith has been named to replace Lamont Robinson after a one-year stint with the Braves. Absegami finished the season with a 5-5 record last fall.
“I’m excited,” Smith said. “It’s been a dream come true for me. I’ve been wanting to be a head football coach for a long time. The stars aligned and I am ready to get started.”
Smith comes to Galloway after a 12-year stint as an assistant coach at Lacey, where he served as a special teams coach and offensive coordinator. Smith has two years of college coaching experience, mentoring quarterbacks at the University Maine, then Kean University.
“Coaching has been in my blood since Day 1,” Smith said. “I went to school at University of Maine, and even then I knew I wanted to be a coach. I didn’t know if it was going to be at the high school or college level. I got into the college level right after school and fell in love with it. I wanted to teach kids, too. So I made the transition to high school, I coached under my head football coach, Lou Vercillo at Lacey. It’s always been something that I’ve always wanted to do.”
Smith graduated from Lacey in 2008, helping the school win a state title in 2006. He went on to become an all-conference quarterback at of Maine.
Smith continued his playing career for 12 years playing arena football, where he was twice named league most valuable player, winning two titles. The urge to play the game has always been strong for Smith.
“I am done unless Atlantic City comes back and we can do both, but that’s probably not happening,” Smith said. “I finished up two years ago. My wife got pregnant. We have the baby and she’s coaching (girls basketball at Holmdel).
