Joe Aresimowicz, the head football coach at Berlin High School for the last nine years, resigned last Friday, citing increased job responsibilities.
“It’s such a hard juggle with the new job and it’s essentially a year-round season,” Aresimowicz said. “I can make it work, but during the legislative session, I’m just an OK football coach. It became harder and harder over the past few years to make it work.
“I never want to feel like I’m shortchanging the players. It was really hard but given the modern-day responsibilities of a modern day football coach. There’s a lot of pressure – something had to give for my own well-being. It was really hard to continue the juggle.”
Aresimowicz had a 67-26 record and Berlin made the playoffs every year but one since he started in 2016. The Redcoats made it to the state championship game twice, losing to St. Joseph 70-18 in 2018 and to Notre Dame-West Haven in 2022,, 35-8. Aresimowicz was a youth football coach before he became head coach at the high school.
A former two-term speaker for the state House of Representatives who was the house majority leader for four years, Aresimowicz currently works as a government relations specialist for Gaffney, Bennett & Associates in New Britain. Aresimowicz was a state representative for 16 years.
“It’s a labor-intensive thing – it’s not just when the legislature is in session, it’s year-round,” he said. “I’ve acquired more clients, so my responsibilities have expanded.”
Last season, Berlin (8-4) defeated Rockville 33-7 in the Class M quarterfinals but lost in the semifinals to Brookfield.
“I offered to help in the transition in any way,” he said. “And quite honestly, I’m going to be at the freshman, JV and the varsity games – maybe I won’t have a headset on but I’m still going to be yelling,…
