Fossil Ridge’s Owen Wind (4) takes the ball upfield during a city rivalry high school football game against Fort Collins on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024 at PSD Stadium in Timnath, Colo.
Fossil Ridge football standout Owen Wind is sticking close to home for his college career.
The SaberCats senior announced Wednesday that he is committed to nearby University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.
Wind was initially committed to Drake University but changed course after receiving an official offer from UNC earlier this month.
“After a great official visit and a thoughtful conversation with my parents, I am excited to announce my commitment to stay close to home and play Division I football at the University of Northern Colorado. Go Bears!” Wind said in a post on X.
Wind was a two-way playmaker at safety and wide receiver, one of the most impactful for a talented Fossil football squad.
In his senior season last fall, he had 37 catches for 551 yards and three touchdowns.
That included one of the top highlights in Colorado high school football last season, a broken-play 63-yard touchdown from quarterback Nick Kubat to Wind that featured the wideout hurdling and breaking several would-be tackles.
Wind also had 53 tackles (35 solo) and a nose for the ball, leading Fossil Ridge with three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and two more forced fumbles.
He’s especially versatile on defense, poised and rangy in pass coverage while also physical enough to play near the line and hold his own in the run game.
It all earned Wind 1st team all-conference honors, 1st team academic all-state recognition, our Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week and a spot on the Coloradoan’s All-Area team.
Wind joins several Fossil teammates committed to play at the next level:
Marcus Mozer (San Diego State signee)
Nate Ceschin (Western Colorado)
Harley Schmidt…
