For every college football offseason, preseason hype for nearly every blue-blood program is warranted. Still, regarding Texas A&M, the Aggies are seemingly always on the cusp of breaking through amid too many late-season lapses that have kept the program in average territory for the last decade-plus.
As he begins his second season, Coach Mike Elko has taken key steps this offseason to position the Aggies as contenders for their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance. He has brought in 14 players from the transfer portal and welcomed former James Madison defensive coordinator Lyle Humphill to the coaching staff.
From a media standpoint, those of us who cover the program attempt to replace “hype” with facts, while certain outside analysts feel A&M’s 2025 roster is more than good enough to overperform and finally make it to the postseason.
Earlier this week, the Pro Football Focus College Football Show hosts Max Chadwick and Dalton Wasserman were very high on what the program can bring in 2025, ranking the Aggies at No. 10 in their Top 10 preseason watch list.
“Solid year for the Aggies overall, on a team that, by no surprise for an Elko coach team, built around the defense, built around the run game, and they are going to have those two things working at a very high level next year,” Chadwick stated.
While A&M’s defense still needs added depth in the interior defensive line, Chadwick is right to point out that the return of Le’Veon Moss, combined with Rueben Owens, Amari Daniels, and two freshman running backs provides OC Collin Klein plenty to work with. Conversely, Wasserman discussed redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed’s role next season.
“You talk about bringing back Marcel Reed as a quarterback who’s a dynamic runner and, honestly, could improve a lot with a full offseason as a passer.”
