BATON ROUGE – Brian Kelly looks to be filling the last major vacancy he has left on his LSU football coaching staff.
Former Florida State assistant coach Alex Atkins is set to become LSU’s new tight ends coach and run game coordinator. Sources within the football program confirmed reports to The Daily Advertiser that Atkins was joining Kelly’s staff.
Atkins was in Tallahassee for five seasons before being fired by Mike Norvell following an unexpectedly bad 2-10 season for Florida State in 2024. But Atkins played a big role in the program’s overall success since coming on board and was there when the Seminoles made a run at the last four-team College Football Playoff two years ago.
Most recently, Atkins served as Norvell’s offensive coordinator along with overseeing the offensive line on staff. He sat out the first three games of last season due to a recruiting violation he committed prior to the 2022 season.

LSU will have to explain its’ hiring of Atkins as the coach is on a two-year show-cause penalty. The NCAA said following an investigation stemming from an April 2022 incident in which Atkins helped facilitate contact between a Florida State booster who offered former Georgia offensive lineman Amarius Mims, who was in the transfer portal at the time of the recruiting violation, a $15,000 per month deal with FSU’s NIL collective.
Atkins also lied to the NCAA about his involvement in the situation and the NCAA determined he had committed two Level II infractions.
The tight ends position came open after Slade Nagle departed Baton Rouge and LSU following the conclusion of the 2024 regular season….
