Oklahoma State football mailbag: What will be the Cowboys’ identity on offense in 2025?

STILLWATER — With the coaching staff finalized and the roster set for spring practice, offseason changes are in the rearview for Oklahoma State football.

But short of a press conference with coach Mike Gundy and his new coordinators, Doug Meacham and Todd Grantham, little is known about the internal workings of these Cowboys.

Fans are curious, and it’s a good time to address some of those inquiries. The Oklahoman’s OSU football beat writer Scott Wright opens the mailbag to answer a few fans’ questions:

What is going to be their identity on offense?

Wright: Much more will be known after spring, considering Meacham must figure out what he can do with his new players. But when he met with the media last week, Meacham didn’t get into much about the specifics of his scheme, but he has experience in both power formations and the spread game.

I think you’ll see elements of both implemented in his schemes, but in general, you’re going to see an offense that craves balance. And if his history tells us anything, Meacham will try to run the quarterback a decent amount.

If you look back at his best offenses, the quarterback was either first or second in rushing attempts, and often in yards as well.

That might give TCU transfer Hauss Hejny a bit of an edge in the competition to start — Meacham noted that Hejny ran a 10.68-second 100 meters in high school — but executing the offense as a whole will be more important than simply being the best runner.
