Q&A: 10 questions for new Dover football coach Matt Rees

Dover High School football alumnus and former Crimson Tornadoes’ defensive coordinator Matt Rees realized a life-long dream when he was named the Tornadoes’ new head football coach earlier this week.

Rees is a 2004 graduate of Dover where he starred on the football field for retired Hall of Fame coach Dan Ifft, whom he now replaces.

Upon graduation, Rees literally went from playing for one HOF coach to another, as he was a key player on the Mount Union football team under Larry Kehres, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Rees was an All-Ohio Athletic Conference linebacker for the Purple Raiders and played on two of their national championship teams. That included scoring a key touchdown off a blocked punt that carried the Purple Raiders to a 35-16 D-III national title win over Wisconsin-Whitewater in the 2006 Stagg Bowl.

Here are 10 questions with Matt Rees:

Q: What kind of offense and defense will you run with the Tornadoes?

A: “At first, I’ll say everything is based on what I Iearned from Coach Kehres. Any Mount coach or someone with a Mount background will say you have to focus on players and formations, then plays. And something else I learned from coach Kehres is you have to have balance, so I look to have a balanced offense. That doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to be 50-50 every game but with the ability to do so every game.

“Defensively, I’m used to a 4-2-5 defense. That’s what I played at Mount Union, and that’s what I’ve run a majority of the time that I have been at Dover. It’s a versatile defense because there’s a lot you can do with it, so when you have to adapt you’re able to do so in such a way that you don’t have…
