Reports: Notre Dame targets Texas Tech football GM James Blanchard

Texas Tech football general manager James Blanchard, an original member of Tech coach Joey McGuire’s staff, has emerged as the top target for Notre Dame to fill its new GM position, national college football writers reported Wednesday.

Reporters for On3, CBS Sports/247Sports and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football all indicated Notre Dame, runner-up in the just-completed College Football Playoff, has zeroed in on Blanchard.

When McGuire was hired by Tech in November 2021, Blanchard was one of several young staff members he brought along from Baylor. He’s given Blanchard wide authority over player-acquisition decisions, including offering visits and scholarships to high school recruits without need for coaches’ approval and heading a Tech personnel department that also evaluates college players in the NCAA transfer portal.

Tech signed back-to-back top-30 recruiting classes in the 2023 and 2024 cycles, the first time a Red Raiders’ staff had achieved that in more than a decade. In December, Tech landed 17 players in the NCAA transfer portal. That group is ranked No. 1 nationally at the moment by On3 and No. 3 by 247Sports.

Nebraska and Texas A&M are known to have shown interest in Blanchard early on in his time at Texas Tech, and he was known to be a target of Southern Cal last offseason.

Blanchard went to high school at West Orange-Stark and to college at Lamar. He’s also worked for Baylor and the NFL’s Carolina Panthers.
