On Thursday afternoon, Vernon Northside announced Derek Schlieve as the school’s next athletic director and head football coach.
Schlieve takes over for Galen Smart after spending the 2024 season in the same role at Sanford-Fritch. The hire was confirmed to the Amarillo Globe-News later that day.
“We are excited for the new challenge,” Schlieve told the Globe-News.
Before his time with the Eagles, Schlieve was Baird ISD’s athletic director and head coach from 2020-24.
The veteran head coach’s 18-year career has also included stops at Clarksville, Saint Jo, Trent and Lefors. Before being a head coach, Schlieve served as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Spring Hill in Longview, Texas.
Schlieve played football at Mayville State University in Mayville, North Dakota, where he was a four-year letter winner and an Academic All-American. Schlieve’s family will join the Indians’ new head coach in Vernon, including sons Camdyn and Xavier Schileve, who both played football at Sanford-Fritch.
Camdyn will play his senior season in the fall of 2025 while Xavier will be a sophomore next year.
Sanford-Fritch went 1-9 in 2024, taking down Clarendon in Week 2. Northside, a six-man football program, went 5-5 last season but has a state title in its recent history.
The Indians took down Jayton in 2006 for a Class 1A Division II title.
“(Schlieve is) known for revamping programs and leading them to success,” Northside wrote in its announcement. “He led multiple teams to historic achievements and helped grow the infrastructure.”
