Detroit HSSA where are they now? Donovan Edwards preparing for Senior Bowl

Donovan Edwards made news this week after talking about his Michigan team’s success against Ohio State in his four seasons with the Wolverines.

Normally, that might seem like a weird flex as yes, Michigan beat Ohio State this year, but the Buckeyes then won four straight games to win the national title.

But Edwards, the 2021 Detroit High School Sports Awards Offensive Football Player of the Year who is preparing to play in Saturday’s Senior Bowl in the hopes of putting an exclamation point on his stellar college career, has some cover in bragging about his four straight wins over Ohio State. The Wolverines, after all, themselves won the national title in 2024.

Edwards is a member of the National Team, which face the American Team in the college football all-star game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET.

And while Edwards draft prospects are bright, a Senior Bowl boost would be welcomed.

Edwards was second on Michigan this season with 589 rushing yards and four touchdowns, a year after rushing for 497 yards and five scores. In fact, by far his best season was in 2022 as a sophomore when he rushed 991 yards on 140 carries, a robust 7.1 yards per carry.

A good receiver out of the backfield, he added 18 catches for 83 yards this year after having 30 for 249 yards last year. And he’s considered a good blocker.

Still, there are questions about his ability to be a No. 1 back at the next level, which have most experts projecting him as a day 3 (rounds 4-7) NFL Draft pick this year.

A big game Saturday could help boost the stock of the former West Bloomfield High School star, making him a player to watch.
