Inside Jeff Grimes’ deal to leave Kansas football, including his initial annual salary at Wisconsin

LAWRENCE — More information has come out surrounding the decision Jeff Grimes made to leave Kansas football for Wisconsin.

Grimes, an assistant head coach/offensive coordinator for the Jayhawks in 2024, took a position as the Badgers’ offensive coordinator following the end of KU’s season. It meant he only spent one season in Lawrence, with a Kansas team that went on to finish 5-7 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12 Conference.

According to a public records request recently obtained by The Topeka Capital-Journal, a letter confirming Grimes’ appointment with Wisconsin — effective Dec. 10, 2024 — outlines his starting annual salary will be $800,000.

“My family and I are grateful and excited for the opportunity to join the Wisconsin football program,” Grimes said in a Dec. 10 Wisconsin release, announcing his hire. “Having been around college football for more than 30 years, I have long admired the history and tradition at Wisconsin, and in particular the blue-collar, tough foundation that has led them to sustained success. I’m excited to blend that physical approach with an offense that attacks in a variety of ways.”

Grimes continued: “I’m thankful to Coach Fickell and the administration for believing in me and I recognize the responsibility of helping build upon the great tradition at Wisconsin and can’t wait to get started.”

The letter, which refers to Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell as Grimes’ supervisor, noted a position like Grimes’ is for an unspecified period and added Grimes serves a the athletic director’s discretion.
