One of a couple coaches who left the Detroit Lions to join Ben Johnson’s coaching staff with the Chicago Bears is quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett, who had been with Detroit since 2022 when he began his coaching career.
After a highly successful career in college, winning a National Championship as the starting quarterback for Ohio State, Barrett never made it into a big spot on a NFL roster and, shortly after his playing career was over, he transitioned into coaching.
Hired to be an offensive assistant on Dan Campbell’s staff in Detroit, Barrett would receive a promotion to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2023, a role he would have for two seasons. Now hired as the top quarterbacks coach in Chicago, Barrett brings knowledge of working as part of Johnson’s offensive coaching staff and will be responsible for continuing the growth and development of quarterback Caleb Williams.
One of Barrett’s college teammates, Joshua Perry, who now serves as a football analyst for the “Chicago Sports Network,” spoke on the former quarterback and what will make him a valuable coach to Williams. Having won a national championship together at Ohio State, Perry says Barrett always had a knack for coaching other players.
Perry said dating back to their playing days, Barrett always showed traits of a guy who would eventually turn to coaching. With Johnson now taking on greater responsibility as head coach, Perry believes Barrett will thrive in a bigger role.
“One hundred percent,” Perry said. “He was always destined to be a guy who could coach other people. I think JT understands the mechanics of doing all of that because he was there in Detroit working with Ben Johnson, as the assistant quarterback coach.
