Super Bowl 59: How good were Patrick Mahomes, Saquon Barkley in high school? See rankings

No one was predicting Patrick Mahomes to become one of the best quarterbacks in history when he was at Whitehouse High School in Texas.

Eleven years ago, Mahomes was a three-star recruit with just a handful of college offers. Fast forward to the present and Mahomes now has as many Super Bowl MVP trophies as he had recruiting stars in high school.

Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59 on Feb. 8.

Recruiting experts didn’t recognize what Mahomes or Travis Kelce — a two-star recruit — would become, but there were plenty of players who lived up to their lofty rankings.

Pro Bowl defensive linemen Chris Jones and Jalen Carter both were five-star recruits in high school. The same goes for Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith and Eagles starting edge rusher Nolan Smith.

Here’s a look at how some of the top players from the two teams were ranked in high school.

The six-time Pro Bowl selection was one of the premier recruits in the nation in the Class of 2013. The Houston (Mississippi) grad was rated the No. 2 defensive end in the nation behind Robert Nkemdiche — the consensus No. 1 player in the nation. Jones signed with Mississippi State over Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn and Florida. Jones was selected by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2016 draft.
