New Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has brought a few assistants from the Detroit Lions as he builds his coaching staff.
One of the assistant coaches who followed Johnson was J.T. Barrett, who started as an offensive assistant before being promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach in Detroit. Now, he’ll be leading the quarterbacks in Chicago.
Tasked to work with and continue the coaching tree from Johnson down to quarterback Caleb Williams, Barrett gets the biggest opportunity of his coaching career with the Bears, and it’s one of the biggest jobs on the new staff. There’s no doubt that the growth and evolution of Williams will be key to Chicago’s success and their coaching staff, so Barrett’s direct work and relationship with him will be key.
Here’s five things to know about the Bears new quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett:
1. Barrett won a National Championship at Ohio State
After starting quarterback Braxton Miller went down with an injury, Barrett came in as replacement and was leading the way for the Buckeyes until he suffered his own injury against Michigan. Third-string quarterback Cardale Jones would end up leaving Ohio State to a National Championship berth against the Oregon Ducks, where they cruised to a 42-20 victory. On top of the team’s success in 2014, Barrett would go on to finish fifth in the Heisman voting that season.
2. Barrett owns several college records
Whether it is the most career passing yards and completions or the Big 10 conference record for most career passing touchdowns and total touchdowns, Barrett has his name etched all over the record books at Ohio State. A standout not only for his school but also the Big 10 conference, Barrett did not find that success translate over to the NFL and he would go undrafted in 2018, bouncing around the league until 2019.
