A two-monthslong national search to find Bakersfield College’s new head football coach was revealed Friday by the institution to be Tyler Thompson, who is a Shafter native, a former BC player and who has been coaching within the Renegades program for the last 11 years.
Thompson played at Shafter High and was a defensive back for the Renegades (2008-09) and at the University of Nevada-Reno (2010-12).
He became a BC assistant coach in 2014 and in 2019 was promoted to defensive coordinator by head coach Jeff Chudy, who coached Thompson as a BC player and hired him to his staff. Thompson stayed in the coordinator role for the duration of R. Todd Littlejohn’s head coaching stint from 2020-24 and who Thompson replaces as head coach.
“I’m truly honored to accept the role as head coach of this incredible program,” Thompson said in a statement. “The tradition, the passion, and the pride that this team represents is something I deeply respect, and I’m excited to work alongside our players and coaches.”
BC’s press release stated that Thompson earned the head-coaching opportunity in a search that included more 45 applicants from across the country and Canada. Six candidates were interviewed.
“Bakersfield College football is woven into the fabric of this community,” BC Athletics Director Reggie Bolton said. “It’s about tradition, grit, and heart. We’re proud to welcome coach Thompson to lead the Renegades, and we’re ready to chase victory while staying true to who we are.”
Thompson’s hiring makes him the program’s 12th head coach since 1922.
In addition to coaching at BC, Thompson is an assistant professor in the Health and Physical Education Department at BC.
Thompson has an Associate of Arts degree from BC, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada Reno and a master’s degree from Fresno…
