The Florida Gators hosted Norcross (Georgia) defensive lineman Carter Luckie last weekend for Florida’s second junior day of the winter recruiting period.
While it’s entirely normal for the Gators to host a 6-foot-5-inch, 250-pound junior defensive lineman at this point in the recruiting cycle, there’s a unique complication with Luckie’s recruitment. He’s a legacy recruit at the University of Georgia and his older brother, Lawson, is a rising star for the Bulldogs.
The Luckie family has a long history with the University of Georgia. Carter’s father, Mike, played for the Bulldogs, as did his uncles, Dustin and Miles, and his older brother. It’s safe to say that UGA entered the race for Luckie a leg up on the competition, but there’s a saving grace for Florida.
Luckie says that the legacy pitch isn’t a major factor in his recruitment. That means Florida has a chance, but it will take some convincing for Luckie to break rank and leave his home state. Hosting Luckie is a big step, and the results have been mostly positive.
“Since it was my first time being down there, I didn’t really know what to expect, but the culture in the locker room and with the coaches was very clear. Everyone works together and overall it’s a great culture,” Luckie said to Gators Online. “(Defensive line) Coach (Gerald) Chatman’s main message to me was that he wants players that can attack with violent hands and hips.”
Luckie watched film and worked with Chatman some more before leaving Gainesville with Florida as one of his top schools, but there’s plenty of work to be done for the Gators. Georgia is getting him on campus for an official visit the weekend of May 30, and he’ll be on campus for the Bulldogs’ junior day this weekend.
