Former Clemson defensive coordinator lands with Oklahoma

According to multiple reports, former Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin has landed a new role in the SEC, joining Brent Venables’ staff at Oklahoma as a defensive analyst.

Goodwin, who spent the past three seasons leading Clemson’s defense, previously worked under Venables as a defensive analyst from 2012-14 and later as a senior defensive assistant from 2018-21. His return to Oklahoma comes after speculation that he would reunite with his former boss, as initially reported in December.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney announced on Jan. 6 that Goodwin would not return as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator. Reflecting on the decision, Swinney acknowledged that Goodwin’s tenure in the role did not go as planned. “It just didn’t work, and that is my fault,” Swinney said on Jan. 15. “It’s as simple as that.”

Despite the outcome, Swinney praised Goodwin’s dedication and work ethic during his time at Clemson. With Goodwin’s departure, Clemson turned to former Indiana head coach Tom Allen, hiring him away from Penn State to lead the Tigers’ defense.
