Former Colorado football head coach Mike MacIntyre has been hired as a defensive assistant by the Mississippi State Bulldogs, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. MacIntyre was most recently the head coach of the FIU Panthers, where he led them to three straight 4-8 seasons before being fired in December.
FIU was MacIntyre’s third head coaching stop. He previously led the San Jose State Spartans from 2010-12 and the Buffs from 2013-18.
MacIntyre’s first tenure at San Jose State began rocky, as the Spartans won only one game during his first season, but he quickly rebuilt them into a 10-win team only two seasons later. That turnaround landed him in Boulder, where things would repeat themselves, as CU went 4-8 in his 2013 debut season. He again led a substantial turnaround as the Buffs went 10-4 in 2016 and reached the Pac-12 championship game. Colorado athletic director Rick George fired MacIntyre late in the 2018 season.
After leaving CU, MacIntyre was Ole Miss’ defensive coordinator in 2019 before holding the same position at Memphis from 2020-21.
Mississippi State struggled on the defensive side of the ball last season, ranking last in the SEC with 34.1 points allowed per game. Head coach Jeff Lebby and the DC Coleman Hutzler will rely on MacIntyre’s experience to help improve the Bulldogs’ defense.
