It’s a family reunion for Maryland football.
The Terps are hiring Pep Hamilton as offensive coordinator, according to the NFL Network, reuniting the longtime NFL assistant coach with his son, incoming freshman quarterback Jackson Hamilton.
Pep Hamilton, 50, has been coaching since 1997. He was most recently the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator in 2022, spending one season under coach Lovie Smith before that staff was let go. Since 2003, Hamilton has held offensive roles on seven NFL teams, including the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers. He was also the head coach and general manager of the XFL’s DC Defenders in 2020.
Hamilton was the quarterbacks coach in Los Angeles in 2020, helping Justin Herbert win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. He was also Andrew Luck’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during Luck’s standout final season at Stanford in 2011 and later worked with the four-time Pro Bowl selection as the Colts’ offensive coordinator from 2013 to 2015. Hamilton interviewed with the Patriots for their head coaching job earlier this month before New England hired Mike Vrabel.

The Charlotte, North Carolina, native and Howard University graduate also has extensive college experience, most recently serving as the assistant head coach and passing game coordinator under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. He began his career as the quarterbacks coach at Howard, where he played quarterback, and was twice a potential candidate to coach the Terps after the dismissal of Randy Edsall in 2015 and DJ Durkin in 2018.
