‘This is different’: Hugh Freeze’s first impressions of new Auburn football quarterbacks

Hugh Freeze has seen it some, but he’s already hearing it from some of his players, too.

“Our receivers are like, ‘This is different. This ball is spinning the right way,'” Freeze said, speaking to reporters Wednesday at the Senior Bowl in Mobile.

Auburn football’s quarterback room will look completely different in 2025, with Payton Thorne, Walker White, Hank Brown and Holden Geriner all departing, either due to eligibility expiration or transfer. In their place is a new four-man contingent, with a pair of former five-star prospects in Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold and 2025 signee Deuce Knight highlighting the bunch.

That pair is already on campus, and Freeze said, from what he’s seen, he’s “excited about those guys.”

“I think Jackson just, if you go back to his high school days, you don’t get to become the Gatorade Player of the Year without a great skill set,” Freeze said. “When I see the way he functions with the fundamentals of that position, with what we want to do, it’s a pretty natural fit.”

In two seasons with the Sooners, Arnold completed 62.9% of his passes for 1,984 yards. He threw 16 touchdowns to six interceptions and added another 560 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. He also caught two passes for 16 yards and a touchdown.

He was Oklahoma’s starter this fall, but after making four starts, he was benched in favor of true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. during the Sooners’ loss to Tennessee. Freeze acknowledged that the “unknown” with Arnold is regaining his confidence after last season.

“I just am a firm believer that — I don’t know, I believe in him,” Freeze said. “I believe in our system and think he’s a really good fit for it, we can restore whatever confidence he may have lost for whatever reason.”
