When Ohio State head coach Ryan Day went into the transfer portal to find the Buckeyes’ next quarterback, not many saw that answer being Kansas State signal-caller, Will Howard. It certainly wasn’t the biggest splash during the offseason, but in retrospect, it was perhaps the most important move Day orchestrated through the portal.
All Howard did was cement himself into Ohio State lore by finishing among the best in the country in Total QBR, and for taking the Buckeyes on a memorable run through the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff, all the way to a thrilling national championship, the program’s ninth overall. Howard showed accuracy, decision-making, and the leadership qualities that ended up being exactly what the team needed in a year that was labeled championship or bust.
And all indications point to this thing having been a mutual Scarlet and Gray love affair. Howard has been very complimentary of the coaching staff, culture, fans, and players he became the fabric of, and now he’s letting everyone know just how much this past year meant to him. Howard took to social media on Friday to share his heartfelt thanks to all of Buckeye Nation for embracing him and changing his life in ways he couldn’t have never imagined.
“I believe that everything in life happens for a reason, and that God has a plan for all of us. And I am eternally grateful that my plan led me here to The Ohio State University,” Howard said. “When I first came in here to Ohio State, I had dreams of competing for a national championship, developing as a player and hopefully going on to the NFL. Little did I know, walking away from this experience, I’d get so much more.
