Nebraska coach Matt Rhule makes headlines regarding future of spring game

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule made headlines following his comments on the future of Nebraska’s spring football game. While speaking to reporters on Saturday, Rhule said that he was highly doubtful that the Huskers would hold the annual Red-White Game, and he had one specific reason why… the transfer portal.

“I hate to say this, but last year we were one of the more televised spring games and I dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities after that.”

Ehsan Kassim of USA TODAY Sports reports that while there may not be a traditional game, the team is still hoping to do something for the fans at the end of the spring practice period. Rhule made it clear that with the current state of the portal, he can’t take any chances.

“The word ‘tampering’ doesn’t exist anymore. It’s just an absolute free open common market. I don’t necessarily want to open up to the outside world. I don’t these guys all being able to watch our guys and say, ‘Wow, he looks like a pretty good player. Let’s go get him. “

Last April, the Huskers held the Red-White Game in front of over 60,000 fans at Memorial Stadium and the Huskers did see several transfer portal departures following the game. The college football landscape has shifted dramatically over the last several years and it should be no surprise that programs like Nebraska try to stay ahead of the trends with major off-season changes.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule says he ‘highly doubts’ there will be a traditional spring game.
