One of Michigan’s top targets shockingly spurns Wolverines, Ohio State for Illinois

Generally, when a top-rated player in the state of Ohio has an Ohio State offer, they end up being Buckeyes. This isn’t always the case — just ask Michigan running back Jordan Marshall, who had been predicted to OSU before he committed to the Wolverines — but it’s often quite rote.

Michigan hoped to have another Jordan Marshall-type scenario compared to an Aaron Scott or Bryce West situation as it pursued 2026 Toledo (Ohio) Central Catholic four-star cornerback Victor Singleton, the top player in the state of Ohio according to 247Sports. Texas A&M is also in pursuit, but Saturday saw Singleton shock the world with the announcement that he’s spurning all of the aforementioned schools and instead committing to Illinois.

Now, it’s a long way until the early signing period in December, so certainly the maize and blue can continue to push for the nation’s No. 44 player, regardless of position. However, the same can be said about Ohio State, Texas A&M, and others.

Still, in the short term, it’s a big blow to Michigan considering the recent efforts the coaching staff had put in, as Sherrone Moore and company had visited Singleton in Ohio and Singleton had come to Ann Arbor in recent weeks to visit campus and get face time with the staff.
