USC football hopes to create a recruiting gold rush

It’s a massive weekend at USC. In addition to the men’s basketball team beating No. 7 Michigan State on Saturday afternoon, Lincoln Riley and the football staff will host their junior day. Riley met Magic Johnson — a Michigan State alumnus — at the MSU-USC game, certainly a way of making his program more visible and attractive. Riley had a lot of other things to do behind the scenes on Saturday, as the Trojans rolled out the red carpet.

Per On3 USC recruiting insider Scott Schrader, the Trojans will ultimately host more than 20 of the 2026 and 2027 recruits on campus this weekend. The list includes six USC commits and a dozen players who are rated as four-star commits or higher.

Three of the headliners are USC’s trio of 2026 cornerback commits. Four-star RJ Sermons, four-star Brandon Lockhart, and three-star Madden Riordan are all committed to the Trojans. USC will also have four-star edge commit Xavier Griffin on campus.

In terms of players not yet committed, the Trojans will have numerous local targets visiting. Some of the headliners include four-star linebacker Talanoa Ili, four-star edge Simote Kataoanga, four-star wide receivers Trent Mosley and Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, and four-star offensive lineman Samuelu Utu. All of those players play their high school football in California.

It will be a massive weekend for Lincoln Riley and new general manager Chad Bowden. After several solid but uninspiring recruiting classes in a row, it is critical that the Trojans land a top class in 2026. There is a long way to go until signing day, but getting off on the right foot would be huge for momentum. The new additions to the football operations staff clearly raise the stakes at USC. There is not a moment to waste, and there isn’t a recruiting battle USC can realistically afford to lose right now.
