Former Alabama football, Georgia strength coach Scott Cochran named West Alabama head coach

Scott Cochran is returning to the state of Alabama.

Cochran, who spent 13 seasons as Alabama football’s strength and conditioning coach under coach Nick Saban most known for being “Coach Yeah,” was named as the new head football coach of West Alabama.

“I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to lead the University of West Alabama football program as head coach,” Cochran said in a statement. “UWA has a rich tradition of athletic excellence, and I look forward to working with our talented student-athletes, dedicated staff, and passionate community to continue that legacy. Together, we will strive for greatness and make our supporters proud.”

While at Alabama, Cochran won six national championships. He also worked with Saban at LSU as a graduate assistant and assistant strength and conditioning coach. He’s been a part of eight national championships.

Cochran left Alabama in 2019, and was the special teams coordinator at Georgia from 2020-23.

Cochran disclosed to ESPN in September been abusing opioids, which led to his departure from Georgia and something he has become an advocate for with his nonprofit, the American Addiction Recovery Association.

“My own personal struggles have given me a unique perspective that allows me to expertly develop players and prepare them to go to the next level,” Cochran continued in his statement. “I get to know players better than they know themselves, and I feel that I have something to give back through head coaching. This is more than just a job for me; it’s a calling to help young men grow both on and off the field.”
