Former Oregon HC Chip Kelly leaves Ohio State for NFL job

One of the most beloved head coaches in Oregon Ducks football history is taking his talents to the NFL once again, this time in a new capacity.

On Sunday afternoon, it was announced that former Oregon head coach Chip Kelly, most recently the offensive coordinator for the national championship-winning Ohio State Buckeyes in 2025, would be taking over as the new OC for the Las Vegas Raiders.

In Las Vegas, Kelly will work under new Raiders head coach Pete Carroll, a long-time USC Trojans and Seattle Seahawks coach who was hired earlier this year.

This will be Kelly’s third NFL job, but first as an offensive coordinator. After his run with the Ducks from 2009-2013, Kelly left Eugene and took over as the head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. After three seasons with Philly, Kelly was fired, but he was hired as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. He was fired by the 49ers after just one season.

Kelly went back to the college level after that, taking over as the head coach for the UCLA Bruins in 2018 and coaching them for five seasons before making the shocking move to take a step down on the coaching ladder and become the offensive coordinator for Ohio State. While it was a move that was questioned at first, Kelly appeared to make the right decision, leading the Buckeyes’ offense to a national championship behind Will Howard and Jeremiah Smith.

Now after his single year with the Buckeyes, Kelly will go back to the NFL as a play-caller. While he may eventually want to be a head coach in the NFL down the line, there is a sense that being an OC fits him, as he is one of the best offensive minds in the nation, and is directly responsible for introducing the spread offense to the college game in 2008 as the OC for the Ducks.
