Ryan Grubb is reuniting with Kalen DeBoer.
Per multiple reports, the former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator is taking the same position at Alabama a year after Grubb was first hired by the Crimson Tide.
As Alabama moved to hire DeBoer to replace Nick Saban, Grubb was lined up to be the Tide’s offensive coordinator in 2024. But days after Alabama’s staff was overhauled, Grubb was hired by new Seattle coach Mike McDaniel to be the team’s offensive coordinator.
Grubb’s time with the Seahawks lasted just one season, however. Seattle scored 22 points per game and had 5.5 yards per play as it went 10-7 and missed the playoffs.
The 2024 season was the first time Grubb hadn’t been on DeBoer’s staff since the 2019 season when DeBoer was an assistant at Indiana. Grubb worked at Fresno State with DeBoer and then went to Washington with him ahead of the 2022 season.
Washington’s offense was one of the most prolific in college football in 2023 with quarterback Michael Penix Jr. throwing to Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan and Ja’Lynn Polk. Penix threw for over 4,900 yards as the Huskies went 14-0 before losing to Michigan in the national title game.
According to ESPN, Grubb will be the play-caller for Alabama’s offense as the Tide look to bounce back from a 9-4 season. Alabama’s offense was plagued with penalties and mistakes at times in 2024 and had a tendency to rely too much on flashes of greatness from Jalen Milroe.
