After only one season coaching under his protégé Ryan Day, Chip Kelly is leaving Ohio State for the NFL.
Kelly will join new Las Vegas Raiders coach Pete Carroll’s staff as offensive coordinator. Kelly was Ohio State coach Ryan Day’s mentor as fellow Manchester, New Hampshire, natives.
Kelly did not immediately return a request for comment from The Dispatch.

Day must now replace both coordinators from his national championship team. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles left for the same job at Penn State. Day also lost offensive line coach Justin Frye, who was hired by the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday.
Day turned over play-calling duties for the first time in his six years as head coach because of his trust in Kelly. Kelly’s play-calling was key in Ohio State’s run to the College Football Playoff championship.
Kelly coached Day as a player at the University of New Hampshire and hired him as quarterbacks coach for his two one-year stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.
Day hired Kelly, 61, as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach after Bill O’Brien left after only three weeks to become head coach at Boston College. Kelly had stepped down as UCLA’s coach and was pursuing NFL jobs when O’Brien left.
Kelly worked closely with Will Howard, who came to OSU as a graduate transfer after an up-and-down career at Kansas State. At KSU, Howard completed 58.8% of his passes with 48 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in four seasons. At Ohio State, albeit with a superior supporting cast, Howard completed 73% of his passes with 35 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. He also ran for seven touchdowns as a Buckeye.
