J.T. Tuimoloau calls playing for Jim Knowles a ‘blessing’

Ohio State football lost both coordinators this offseason after a masterclass on both sides of the ball over the course of the last few months. After making a resounding run through the College Football Playoff and clobbering teams like Tennessee and top-ranked Oregon, the Buckeyes now must find replacements for both.

Thankfully, Chip Kelly is taking his tactics and talents to the NFL, where he’s been before. However, Las Vegas is a different beast, and he’ll have quite the pressure to succeed there. Unfortunately, former defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles, is staying within the Big Ten and heading a little more east to Pennsylvania.

He’ll have a larger role in calling the shots for the Penn State defense, one that was among the best in the country last season. As for Knowles, he’s not leaving a bad taste in the mouth of players, and one defensive end, J.T. Tuimoloau, even heaped some praise on his former coach ahead of the team’s national championship game with Notre Dame.

“I always called him Batman. He is in his cave, and he comes out and you never know what he has in store, but you’ve got to get to know him. Once you get to know him, that’s one guy you’ll have on your side. To be able to play for him as a DC, it’s a blessing,” Tuimoloau said via CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello and Richard Johnson.

Tuimoloau is one of the more trustworthy names as well, ending the season with 12.5 sacks and 61 combined tackles. He’s going to be among the highest-drafted Buckeyes, and Knowles clearly had a part in the development of his game.
