LOOK: Kirk Herbstreit in Ann Arbor in maize and blue

ESPN’s primary college football color commentator Kirk Herbstreit, a prominent Ohio State alum, cried tears of joy when his Buckeyes won the national championship in Atlanta on Jan. 20. But just weeks later, Herbstreit was in a position that certainly will draw the ire of the fan base he used to cater to as the OSU quarterback.

It’s thought to be heretical to go from one side of the rivalry to another, especially for the two participants of The Game. However, sometimes it just works out that a legacy could end up playing for the other school, a commit could flip or a recruit could spurn the in-state school, or in some cases, a player from one school could transfer to the other. In Herbstreit’s case, his son, quarterback Chase Herbstreit, got a committable offer from Michigan football and he ended up taking it.

Over the weekend, the Herbstreit family ended up in Ann Arbor for Chase’s official visit, and the whole family was dressed appropriately.

For the Ohio State faithful, this one has gotta burn.

The younger Herbstreit is one of two quarterbacks in the 2025 class, with the other being five-star Bryce Underwood, the top overall-rated player, regardless of position.

As for the elder Herbstreit, he’s already drawn his fair share of ire from the Columbus-based fan base, whether it’s been for not giving his Buckeyes enough love, his general objectivity, or the fact that he won’t openly hate on Michigan as some would like him to (like his College GameDay counterpart Desmond Howard does going the other direction). Certainly, with his son going to Michigan, this won’t help matters any.
