All across Arizona high schools on Wednesday, football seniors will be signing national college letters of intent, but they won’t come with the same fanfare as the December early signing period, which closes after 72 hours.
The heavy hitters of Division I swept through in December, collecting letters from top high school seniors, then, it seemed, turned their recruiting attention to the 2026, 2027 and 2028 prospects, while continuing to stack their rosters through the NCAA transfer portal.
That left seniors such as Tempe McClintock’s dynamic passing duo of quarterback Jaxon Knutson and wide receiver/safety Kemon Jackson waiting and wondering whether a Division I school would come through with an offer.
None of them did.
But that doesn’t mean they won’t be playing in college. They will be signing on Wednesday with Division II Colorado State University Pueblo. Jackson was offered first by the school and then lobbied for Knutson.

“They picked up on me kind of late,” Knutson said. “Coach (Philip) Vigil, the head coach, said, ‘I honestly thought you were going D-I, man. We were waiting.’ So they pulled the trigger ultimately on me.
“It was the best spot. I went on my official visit. It was everything that I wanted.”
Knutson, 6-3, 200 pounds, put up impressive enough numbers his senior year to attract college attention: 3,796 yards on 214-of-318 passing for 47 touchdowns with five interceptions on a 9-2 5A team that lost in the first round at state to the only team McClintock lost to all season — Gilbert Campo Verde.
Knutson came inches away from winning the first-round game, tackled just short of the goal line as time expired in a 42-39…
