On Saturday morning, Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule went into detail about the roles that some new additions will play in the 2025 season. Specifically, he talked about transfer linebacker Dasan McCullough and how he envisions him fitting into John Butler’s defensive scheme.
McCullough comes over to Nebraska after spending last season with the Oklahoma Sooners. He recorded 17 tackles in 2024. He made his mark initially as a freshman at Indiana, recording 48 tackles, three pass deflections and four sacks. Now, he will serve a veteran role on a linebacker unit with much promise.
Rhule envisions McCullough in a specific role, as he told reporters on Saturday afternoon. The Husker head coach told the press that McCullough will be a pass rusher and that a plan is in place to prepare him for the EDGE in Nebraska’s 3-3-5 defense.
McCullough’s versatility and athleticism certainly allow him to have a major role in the defense. It will be interesting to see exactly how Huskers utilize him, as they establish a new defensive scheme under first-year coordinator John Butler. Allowing him to be a pure pass-rusher could play to his strengths and make the Huskers’ defense even more dangerous.
Dasan McCullough is going to be a pass rusher at Nebraska. They’ll put weight on him and play him near the LOS. DE in a 4-man, Edge in 3-4/3-3-5.
Rhule wants McCullough to have a “home” as a player. He’s played all over defenses at Oklahoma and Indiana.
