Ohio State football just won the national championship, but the celebration didn’t last long as there appears to be a mass exodus from the coaching staff. Ryan Day has to replace his defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles has left for the same position at Big Ten rival, Penn State. Offensive line coach, Justin Frye has departed for the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL and offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly is heading to the Las Vegas Raiders of the NFL.
While rumors are swirling that the coordinator positions will likely be internal hires, the offensive line coach will likely come from outside the program and it just so happens the perfect candidate isn’t too far away. Former three-year starter on the offensive line for Ohio state, Jim Cordle, has carved out an impressive coaching resume as he sits as the current associate head coach/offensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Ashland Eagles at the Division II level.
Cordle played for the Buckeyes from 2005 through 2009 and was a graduate assistant in 2015 and 2016 after his NFL career with the New York Giants came to an end. Despite not coaching again at the FBS level, the OSU grad has vital experience with smaller schools and has roots in Ohio, which could help with the emphasis needed on the rivalry.
I’d love to see the Jim Cordle possibility amplified. I get the interest in LeCharles Bentley, but Jim Cordle has already been an OL coach.
