Ohio State football linked to MAC coach for offensive coordinator position

Ohio State football is coming off one of the most impressive seasons in college football history and a national championship in its pocket, but it appears now that the pie is done baking, everyone wants a piece. We know that defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles is off to State College, Pennsylvania to call the Penn State defense. Shortly after that announcement, offensive line coach, Justin Frye, took off for the big lights of the NFL to the Arizona Cardinals. Perhaps the most alarming departure is offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly also taking an NFL gig with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Rumors are swirling in regard to who the next play caller for the Buckeyes will be, and although it appears current co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach, Brian Hartline, is the odds-on favorite, some outside candidates have emerged. One of the more interesting names mentioned has been Joe Moorhead, who is currently the head coach of the Akron Zips.

Moorhead has been the head man at Akron since 2022 and has had a pretty miserable tenure so far with many mentioning that his seat is likely hot heading into 2025. But there is no denying his pedigree as an offensive play caller and his tenure as offensive coordinator for the Oregon Ducks from 2020 through 2021 was electric.

Before arriving to Oregon, Moorhead also had a stint as head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs with average results that resulted in his firing. People are likely to focus on his head coaching gigs, but his resume as a coordinator with Oregon and Penn State, where he coached from 2016 through 2017 are hard to argue against.

His offensive genius helped Penn State earn a victory over OSU in 2016 and helped Oregon win against Ohio State in 2021. The former Fordham quarterback runs an effective and creative running scheme that would be a good fit in Columbus, so we’ll…
