Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have some of the most talented assistant coaches in the nation on staff in Eugene, and at this point in the offseason, names often get brought up as candidates to move on to other positions.
The Ducks staved off the Dallas Cowboys over the weekend and were able to hold onto running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples, who interviewed for the Cowboys RB coach position. The Ducks are also hoping to hold onto defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator Chris Hampton, who was mentioned as a top candidate to take over as the Ohio State Buckeyes’ next defensive coordinator.
It appears that the Buckeyes might be trying to take more from Oregon, as well.
With Chip Kelly leaving Columbus to take over as the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders, Ohio State is looking for a replacement. According to Pete Nakos at On3, Oregon’s OC Will Stein is among the top candidates for the position.
Oregon inside linebackers coach Will Stein leads practice as the Oregon Ducks hit the practice field ahead of Michigan State Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024 at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex in Eugene, Ore.
“He stepped in as Oregon’s offensive coordinator a year ago and helped Bo Nix finish third in Heisman voting,” Nakos wrote. “Will Stein’s 2022 UTSA offense ranked No. 9 nationally in total offense (486.1 yards) and No. 12 in scoring offense (38.7 points). A former Louisville quarterback, he interviewed for the San Diego State job last year. Stein helped develop another Heisman Trophy finalist this season in Dillon Gabriel. The Oregon quarterback threw for 3,857 yards with 30 touchdowns and only six interceptions. The Ducks averaged 34.9 points and 437.4 yards per game in 2024.”
