Reports: New Mexico football expected to hire general manager

Feb. 3—New Mexico is reportedly hiring its first general manager in program history.

Memphis general manager Beau Davidson is expected to be named to the same role at UNM, per reports.

In his lone season with the program, Davidson helped the Tigers land 24/7 Sports’ top-ranked transfer class in the American Athletic Conference. The Katy, Texas native would join the Lobos after stints as the director of player personnel at three separate programs and with over a decade of coaching experience at the prep and collegiate ranks.

A multi-year contract and “significant” raise is helping UNM lure Davidson from Memphis, per Football Scoop.

When asked about the possibility of hiring a general manager in December, head coach Jason Eck said it’s something the program was evaluating in light of the transfer portal and the increasing prevalence of name, image, likeness.

“It’s an evolving landscape and I really believe you have to adapt — I think someone said adapt or die,” Eck said at his introductory press conference. “And I think that’s something you have to do. You can’t (wish) for the old days before NIL and before the portal, you need to adapt and adopt what’s there.

“And I think we’ve been able to do that.”

Davidson, a former tight end and long snapper at North Texas, started his career as a graduate assistant with the Mean Green before coaching the offensive and defensive lines at Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College and Northeastern (Oklahoma) State. He then spent 2010-16 as a high school teacher, position coach and coordinator in Texas and reentered the collegiate ranks as Howard Payne (Texas) University’s defensive coordinator in 2017.
