It is obvious Texas Longhorns head football coach Steve Sarkisian is one of the best coaches in college football. Sark is a good recruiter, he’s good at player development and at program building. But, while he has reached the college football playoff semifinals the past two years, Sark has yet to win a national title.
Ari Wasserman of On3.com took on the tough task of ranking the best coaches in college football. He took into consideration factors like national titles, recruiting, talent development, recent and past success.
So where is Sarkisian on the list? Wasserman ranked the Texas coach No. 4. Sark trails No. 1 Kirby Smart of Georgia, No. 2 Ryan Day of Ohio State and No. 3 Dan Lanning of Oregon. Marcus Freeman of Notre Dame rounds out the top five.
It makes sense that Sark is behind Smart and Day. Both have won national titles. In fact, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney is the only other active coach that has won a title. Swinney ranks No. 6 on this list. Sarkisian, Lanning and Freeman are definitely in a group of that have had big success, just not the biggest.
Here’s what Wasserman had to say about the Texas coach.
4. Steve Sarkisian, Texas
It may be easy to mock Sarkisian for that goal line toss Texas called lated in the loss to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff semifinal. But when you zoom out, Sarkisian has brought Texas all the way “back.” Saying that isn’t a joke anymore. It has happened. Sure, Texas hasn’t won a national title under his leadership, Sarkisian has assembled one of the deepest, most talented rosters in the country. Texas will be a national title contender every year under his guidance moving forward. Texas isn’t a punchline anymore. It was two years ago. That means a lot.” — Ari Wasserman
