The Oklahoma Sooners lost a pair of key contributors when Danny Stutsman and Billy Bowman declared for the NFL draft. Stutsman was arguably the most important player to the Sooners’ defensive turnaround to start the Brent Venables era in Norman. With Stutsman preparing for the draft, the Sooners are preparing for life without their All-American linebacker.
ESPN released their way-too-early picks to be All-Americans in 2025, and the Oklahoma Sooners didn’t feature a single player on either the offensive or defensive side of the football. But that had us curious: which players have the best shot at being All-Americans for the Sooners by the end of 2025?
John Mateer, QB
ESPN’s pick: Cade Klubnik, Clemson
The Oklahoma Sooners are putting their offensive eggs in John Mateer’s basket. Though the offense has to take a huge step from what it was in 2024, he’s proven capable of having an MVP type performance after 44 total touchdowns, just over 3,100 yards passing and almost 900 yards rushing.
If the Sooners want to contend for a playoff spot or even an SEC title game appearance, Mateer will have to have an All-American type season. But with the state of the quarterback position in 2025, it’s not too far-fetched that Mateer could rise from the ranks of the underrated and be the best quarterback in the nation next year.
Jayden Jackson, DT
ESPN’s Picks: Peter Woods, Clemson and L.T. Overton, Alabama
Jayden Jackson made a name for himself as a true freshman, earning freshman All-American honors from a number of outlets, including the Pro Football Writer’s Association of America. So he’s going to be on their radar when it comes to All-American voting in the future. All he has to do is to continue improving and be the force he’s already proven to be in the middle of the Oklahoma Sooners defense.
