Last week, the NCAA handed down penalties to West Texas A&M head football coach Josh Lynn for recruiting violations that occurred when Lynn was in the same position at Nebraska-Kearney.
According to the school’s resolution with the NCAA, the UNK staff “booked cost-free one-way airfare for six football prospective student athletes to participate in preseason practice and/or enroll in classes, and the former football staff members arranged for one of the prospects to receive interim lodging afterarriving on campus.”
In total, Nebraska-Kearney’s staff is accused of giving out $1,872 in impermissible benefits in Aug. 2021, as well as July and Aug. 2022. According to the NCAA-negotiated resolution, these benefits resulted in three players competing in 32 games while ineligible.
“Nebraska-Kearney, the former head coach and the enforcement staff agree that the formerhead coach failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance,” the NCAA wrote. “Because he was involved in, had knowledge of and approved of the practice.”
West Texas A&M self reported the infractions to the NCAA in the summer of 2023, according to the resolution, and Lynn sat out the Buffaloes final regular season game of 2024 as a result.
UNK will receive two years of probation, a fine tallying almost $4,000 and a scholarship reduction for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons in addition to vacating multiple wins. The rest of Lynn’s penalties are described as, “two-year show-cause orders that included suspensions and/or recruitinglimitations.”
The Buffs head coach released a statement addressing the penalties following the NCAA’s resolution.
“In regards to the recent NCAA investigation, I take full responsibility as a head coach for the violations that occurred under my watch,” Lynn said. “To be clear, the NCAA ruled that violations did occur however no unethical conduct…
