LSU Football elevates JR Belton to Director of Football Operations

LSU football has a new director of football operations. JR Belton was promoted to the role on Tuesday, per a report from CBS Sports and 247Sports. He had served as the program’s recruiting director for the duration of Brian Kelly’s tenure in Baton Rouge.

In his new position, Belton will work with Kelly and general manager Austin Thomas to oversee the daily operations of LSU Football. The change follows a parting of ways between the program and Jas Smith, who had served as the operations director since January 2022.

As the director of recruiting, Belton led the signing of the No. 1 ranked transfer portal class in 2025 as well as three top-10 high school recruiting classes. The Tigers signed a combined 59 players rated four or five starts under him.

Belton got his start at LSU in the Ed Orgeron era. Prior to Kelly’s arrival, he worked as the director of scouting. He also served in recruiting roles with Virginia and Louisiana Tech.

A native of Monroe, LA, Belton played football at West Monroe High School before joining the team at Louisiana Tech. He graduated with a business degree in 2019.
