To have one player make it to the Super Bowl from a local high school is quite an accomplishment. But to have two from the same school in the same game is a “rare feat,” says Mallard Creek High School Football Coach Kennedy Tinsley.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jordan Davis and Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Lineman DJ Humphries both played at Mallard Creek High School.
Tinsley didn’t coach the two former Mavericks playing in the big game, but he knows them from how much they give back to the program.
“They just kind of quietly do things for the kids and the teams. We did a deal for Jordan where he came back, he actually helped us with our trip years ago, has helped the team equipment and things of that nature,” Tinsley told Channel 9.
Mallard Creek has only been open since 2007, but it’s already put at least four players in the National Football League.
“Mallard Creek’s been open for a short period of time, but it’s had a remarkable football history,” Tinsley said.
Humphries, a member of Channel 9′s Big 22, graduated with the Class of 2012. After a successful stint wit the Arizona Cardinals, including going to the Pro Bowl, he got picked up by the Chiefs in November. Now, he’s playing in the Super Bowl.
Davis was in the Class of 2018, then went to college at the University of Georgia, where he won a national championship.
Amy Foster taught them both. She described both of them as upright student-athletes who were charismatic and dedicated.
As they take the field in the biggest game in American sports, they’ll be inspiring the school’s current players.
“I think it helps motivate a dream in all of them. They motivation in every last one of them ultimately helps them become better people, which is what I’m looking for,” Tinsley said.
