On Wednesday night, Farwell ISD officially approved the hire of its next head football coach, Derrick Shelton.
Shelton takes the position after serving as the offensive coordinator at Mount Pleasant High School in East Texas since April 2024. Prior to his stint with the Tigers, Shelton was on staff at Walnut Grove High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
Shelton’s tenure at Farwell will be his first as a head coach, but his fourth coaching stop in West Texas, as the Steers’ new athletic director served as an assistant at Estacado, Kermit and Borger earlier in his career.

Shelton played football for head coach Gary Jack at Clarendon High School before heading to Weatherford, Oklahoma, to play along the offensive line at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
“I grew up there in the Panhandle,” Shelton told the Globe-News. “Clarendon, a (Class) 2A school. I know how those small schools function. I played football, and then I went straight from football to basketball, then straight from basketball to baseball. I enjoy the small town aspect because, everybody knows everybody. Its a really tight-knit community, which is something that I really enjoy being a part of.”
In addition to his familiarity with the Texas Panhandle, Shelton said that being closer to his family factored into his decision to accept the position at Farwell. In East Texas, Shelton was six hours away from his parents.
