The Northern Michigan University football team has gone a combined 0-22 the last two seasons while being outscored by an average of 30.6 points per game during that span.
Perhaps all NMU needs is some more Green Bay area talent to help turn things around and win a game for the first time since November 2022.
The Wildcats signed five local standouts during National Signing Day on Wednesday, a list that includes Bay Port’s Bennett Deppeler, Nick Hawker and Sawyer Torp, De Pere’s Lucas Koskey and Green Bay Notre Dame’s Nicholas Gruesen.
The group joins a program that had former West De Pere quarterback Duke Shovald and defensive back Carter Schmitt along with former De Pere wide receiver Hayden May on the roster as freshmen last season.
“Really, it’s nothing short of a miracle the way this class came together,” NMU coach Shane Richardson told the school’s website about his 2025 signings. “Two really tough seasons, wondering how it was going to really work with guys seeing the vision and understanding where we were as a program. Two tough seasons, in terms of record.
“Once you get guys up on campus, once you start to create that vision for them and let them see our players, let them see Northern Michigan, let them see how we operate the program, there is just so much good. A lot of guys, I think, really saw that, believed in that.”
Bay Port wide receiver Sawyer Torp had 48 receptions for 868 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. He signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play at Northern Michigan University.
Deppeler, Hawker and Torp all played key roles in leading Bay Port to the WIAA Division 1 state championship in 2024.
