For the second consecutive week, Marysville has a new football coach.
Mike Young, who has been with the program since 2013, was named head coach Tuesday, pending school board approval. Chase Longwell initially accepted the job Jan. 28 but resigned two days later, in part due to the uncertainty of him landing a teaching job in the school district by the beginning of the 2025-26 school year.
Young, 39, is a science teacher at Marysville Early College High School, which is adjacent to the main high school. He and his wife, Brooke, live in Marysville with their children, Addison, 10, and Jace, 8.
“The kids would run through a wall for that guy,” athletic director Joey Day said Thursday. “Mike was definitely a highly touted candidate as well and has done a really good job on our staff. He’s a champion for kids.”
Young served as co-defensive coordinator with Kevin Brandfass the past three seasons. Former head coach Brent Johnson stepped down in December after eight seasons.
“I felt like I was ready for the next step and have worked really closely with Brent over his time as the head coach,” Young said. “I’m really excited and honored for the opportunity to take on this challenge and lead this program and take it to new heights. It’s a storied program. There’s a lot of tradition in Marysville and lots of community support and pride here. I want to continue to build on that.”

Although the Monarchs were a combined 7-15 the past two seasons, they went 7-5 in 2022 and 12-1 in 2021, reaching the Division I, Region 2 final.
